The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 3 - 6, 1994

 

Tuesday, May 3, 1994

 

A dite nice today. It is kind of on the sunny and partly cloudy side. Not at all warm. Wind is blowing some. Carmen came early and done her work. Also the nurse came early for Billie. This morning Dorothea called, Dot in stable condition. Don’t respond much. Her condition don’t sound very good. Well in p.m. it cleared off very nice and warm. Carmen, Kim and I went to Ames shopping. I got a lot of things for the cleaning etc. It was a very nice day. Tonight Carmen and Arnold hauled out dressing down to Walt’s. Kids enjoyed that a lot. Betty down to Betty’s tonight to help her clean.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 4, 1994

 

Kind of cloudy in a.m. Cleared nice in the p.m. Carmen went to town, did the shopping. Kim came this morning. She and Carmen went up to get the spring plants. Betty is cleaning her bedrooms today or started them. Betty got a lot done today. She got supper up here tonight. Then went down to Betty Smith’s and Dorothea, they got a lot done down there. Carmen and Arnold and kids got rest of the manure out tonight. Brogan loves that place so much down there. Also Carmen likes it too.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 5, 1994

 

Carmen came this morning, also the nurse. Carmen did her work, went to town. Carmen got to go to work at NCMH again from 3 to 11. Dorothea got the supper tonight. Watched the soaps this p.m. Betty cleaning some more today. Cameron down there this p.m. while Carmen is working. Kim and Tom up to New Hampshire shopping this p.m. I’m much better today.

 

 

 

Friday, May 6, 1994

 

Aunt Ava McKeen Keen’s birthday. A warm sunny day, some cloudiness. Carmen came, done all her work. Nurse came later to do Billie. Kim came and she washed and they cleaned the porch. It looks nice. Cameron here today with Carmen. We watched programs. Billie been in outfield all day. Dorothea came and did the supper. Cam was here also Brogan came. Dorothea had to work but got through early. Betty and Walt out to supper tonight. Betty worked at Betty Smith’s last night.
