The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 17 - 19, 1994 Joy's Birthday

 

Thursday, February 17, 1994 BETTY LOUISE CROOK HORTON 51 YEARS TODAY

 

Very mild today. I did the usual. Carmen came and did her work. She came and got the mail. Came and got the supper, a good one. Cameron very good tonight after they came, no problem. Betty and Walt went shopping today, gone till into the evening. I got a gift from Esther. Also got her letter, first one for three weeks. I talked with her on the phone today. Also she is much improved.

 

 

 


Friday, February 18, 1994 TOM HOME TONIGHT

 

A wonderful day, sunny and very warm. The snow Dripping off the roof all day. Carmen came early, she done the work, helped me when I took my bath. The nurse came for Billie, helped him. Carmen cleaned up the house. She and Betty went to Norway to shop this PM. Then in evening they went swimming. Brogan loved that. She is going to stay at her grandmother’s tonight. Dorothea got the supper tonight, very good. She brought the girl, Mrs. Porter, she tried my dress on so she can make the rest of them. Tonight Tom came home. Kim was so pleased. He too was glad to get home.

A most beautiful day. Sunny and very mild. Carmen came today. She did cooking besides the other work. Brogan down to her grandmother and grandpa’s today. She had a friend up to her house today and tonight she will stay. Cameron came with Carmen tonight when she came to get supper. Cam was quite good, one or two upsets. He is a beautiful child and I love him so much. He is smart too.
