The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Friday, March 4, 1994

 

A mixed day of weather today. Snow, rain and cloudy. Gloomy. Watched soaps in p.m. Nurse came today also Carmen came. Dorothea came this p.m. David now has five baby lambs. Carmen cleaned the house and did a lot today, washed windows etc.

 

 

 

Saturday, March 5, 1994

 

Up at about 6 AM. Got dressed. Carmen came early for coffee. David came and had coffee. Carmen got the breakfast. Done up the work. She went home, took Brogan to her friends. They are going bowling. Cameron got hurt this morning. He climbed up on a stool into the cupboard and got a razor. It hurt him. Susan came today, she looked at the pictures Esther had sent. She cut Billie’s hair and done Dorothea’s hair. Carmen made a sloppy Joe the supper. Tom plowed in the middle of the night. I wrote to Esther. Carmen and Cameron came and got the supper. He is such a cute child.

 

 

 

Sunday, March 6, 1994

 

Nice and sunny. Dorothea came early also Walt for coffee. Dorothea worked, got the breakfast and done up the work. Billie’s nurse came. Betty came, got the supper, toasted cheese and toasted egg sandwich. She popped some popcorn. Very good. Billie and I watched a movie on TV. It has become a very good mild sunny day.

 

 

 

Monday, March 7, 1994

 

A cloudy and dreary day. Carmen came this morning. Done all the morning work. Zac came later and had coffee. I didn’t do anything as usual. Betty and Carmen went to Ames over to Norway. They got some things for the kids Bro and Cam. Also I had her get some doilies for me. Betty got supper tonight. Carmen and kids stayed here for supper.
