The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 21 - 24, 1994 Bro's Brownies Ceremony

 

Monday, March 21, 1994 BROGAN WENT TO HER NEW SCHOOL

 

Today Brogan went to the new school downtown. Carmen took her. She was pleased about that. Today the new school open down here. They had been going to Naples to school since last year because the school had a breathing problem for teachers and kids. Tonight Brogan has gone to the brownie awards at the town office. Betty got the supper tonight, very good. Walt was up with her. Cameron and the new puppy called today with Carmen. We put some money into the bank today.

 



 

 

Tuesday, March 22, 1994 big snowstorm

 

Well what a mess we got today from the heavens above. Snow snow and rain in Portland. It was so sickening to see it come down all day. Carmen gone to work tonight. The roads have been kept plowed etc. all day. Betty came and got the supper tonight. No school today because of the bad storm. Billie 63 years old today. Had guests in on the 20th for his birthday.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 23, 1994

 

A beautiful day. The old snow that made such a mess yesterday. It went a lot. It was a beautiful day. Nurse came also Carmen. Betty called, Carmen got the supper. Cameron was here, he was like a angel, very good. The old snow dropped off the trees and wires very much. So by tonight we are all free of it. Carmen to town and done the shopping.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 24, 1994

 

Fair. Carmen came, did her regular duties. Also did her chores. Her calf is a dite better. She brought up the tape of Tom’s party. It was very nice. We enjoyed it very much. Nurse came and did Billie this morning. Carmen and Arnold to a meeting about Nick today in Portland. Dorothea came and got the supper.
