The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, March 29, 1994

 

Cloudy all day. We didn’t get the snow they said we would. Carmen came and done her work. David came for coffee. Early the nurse came and Betty too. We done the closets in my bedroom and Billie’s. Also the bureau drawers etc. Betty did such a good job. Carmen called a minute. Brogan home sick again from school. Carmen called her dad today. Brogan has been missing him so much. She asked him to come see her. It was so pitiful the way Brogan feels about this.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 30, 1994

 

A very nice sunny day, the snow settled a lot today. Carmen came, done her work. Also Billie’s nurse came. Betty and Cameron came up in p.m. He is a cute child. Betty hauled him up in the cart. A bad day for Carmen. She was about completely exhausted at supper time. She went to Oxford to get something for the calf. Also to town to get the groceries. She had customers today too. I worry about her working so hard.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 31, 1994

 

A very nice sunny warm day. I didn’t do much except soaps, reading. Carmen came this forenoon. Done all the work. Nurse came for Billie. Dorothea came this p.m. Got the supper. Betty to Windham and done some grocery shopping. Zak met her then they shopped together. She didn’t get home very early. Brogan and Cameron still sick with colds.

 

 

 

Friday, April 1, 1994

 

A partly cloudy day. Not very warm. Carmen came and did all the work, washed floors and all. Then she went to town and cashed the checks and paid the bills. She made out all the bills I owed. Nurse came to see Billie. Dorothea came and got a very good supper. Brogan called in p.m. She brought some popcorn. Carmen sick. She slept while Cameron did. Betty came and brought up brownies, they were so good. Bert Melby made them for Betty. So good.
