The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, April 17, 1994

 

At last a good nice sunny day. Dorothea here early and worked. Walt here for coffee. Well it has been a quite long day. Betty called. She got the supper early because they were going to have nice broiled steaks. Zak was there. Carmen and family have been on the move after Carmen got rested. She is so tired. Now she got to work tonight. It is bad stuff the way she works.

 

 

 

Monday, April 18, 1994

 

A partly cloudy day, some sun. Not very warm. Today Zak came, and he did the radiators and appliances. Did a good job. Carmen came, did her work. Nurse came to take care of Billie. In PM Bro called also Cameron. Brogan and BJ gone with Zak to Portland to the Children’s Museum. The snow has disappeared at last. I wish it would be better weather. Betty got the supper, very good one.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 19, 1994

 

Well this has been a mixed day. Quite cloudy all forenoon then in p.m. it was a nice sunny day, in p.m. milder. Carmen came early this morning after working at the hospital all night. She was so tired. David came for coffee. I didn’t do much today as usual. Watched the soaps in p.m. Betty had Cameron all day and Brogan and BJ was down there. Cleaned up the Playhouse.

 

 

 

Wednesday, April 20, 1994

 

Carmen busy. She done the work here. Done the grocery shopping. She and Kim to Portland to order the tent for the upcoming wedding. Kim up to stay with Tom in his new apartment in Augusta. Carmen came and did her work. Nurse came for Billie.
