The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Well this has been a very rainy day. It did a good job on this snow. It is quite bare now. Kim came early and did the ceilings and Betty, she came and she did the dish cupboard, glass ones and they look so nice and shiny. They both did a very good job. I am better of this cold today. It is most all gone. They both did very good work. It looks so much better. Betty got the supper tonight, very good. Had a roast chicken and the works. Very good.

A kind of a partly cloudy day. Carmen and nurse came and did the works. Nurse took care of Billie. Carmen went to town shopping. Cam was here this morning. Done the washing. Tom stayed up to his new apartment for the first time. I’m glad he has this new job and I hope he does very well.

A nice day. All snow gone. It was high temps about 65°. Carmen came, she and Cameron. She did the work, cleaned up the house. Cam  was quite good while he was here. Nurse came for Billie. Betty dropped in a minute today. Dorothea came early this p.m. She did Billie’s papers. Also fixed his toes. She had a very good supper. Then she went down to Betty’s, they all went walking from Dorothea’s. Tonight Susan’s friend Eileen died of cancer. Too bad, she was only in her early 40s. Watched programs for last time till Monday.

Foggy and raining today. Not much snow left after the nice mild sunny day of yesterday. It rained so hard by showers today. Carmen came, did her work. She was exhausted from working all night. I am so worried about her. She has two children that need her, more important than this or a wedding. I’ll be glad when she gets all over it all and get settled for winter. I hope she won’t work. As long as she works here that is enough for her to do. She don’t have time enough. David here for coffee.
