The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 2 - 4, 1994 Easter Sunday

 

Saturday, April 2, 1994

 

A nice sunny day when we got up. David came for coffee. Carmen came, did her work. The nurse came, done Billie. I haven’t done much today as usual. Carmen and Betty gone to Oxford and Norway. Also to Lewiston to get BJ. Brogan gone to the scouts today, one trip to visit the elderly patients at the Hazen House in North Bridgton. Also to the church for a get together. She is enjoying at all. I wrote to Esther  today. Billie has been visiting Esther. Dorothea has been working today.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 3, 1994

 

A very nice Easter day here. The weather want very good. Cloudy all the day. But Kim cooked a very nice Easter dinner. Carmen, Betty and Betty Smith helped her to get the dinner together and on the table. She cooked all day at home yesterday ,the pastries. A beautiful daffodil cake, cupcakes, brownies, cookies etc. etc. Also we had hot cross buns, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, a very good Jell-O salad, gravy, spinach. It was so good. All enjoyed it very much. Guests were Carmen, Arnold, Billie Joel, Brogan, Cameron, Betty Smith, Betty H and Zak, Mindy and Tom got here just in time to even let us. Billie and I. Walt was sick so he didn’t come, we missed him being here. It was so nice and Kim did so well.

 



 

 

 

Monday, April 4, 1994

 

A springlike day, cloudy in a.m., cleared later. Carmen came and the nurse. Zac up for coffee. I got Esther’s letter off. Carmen, Kim, Betty and Brogan gone to pick out a wedding dress for Carmen. Brogan didn’t go to school. She had a earache.
