The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 9 - 12, 1994

Saturday, April 9, 1994

Kind of on the cloudy side. Not a real sunny day. Carmen came this morning, also Billie’s nurse. David came for coffee. Carmen came and did her work. Carmen and Arnold came down to Betty’s, they burned some apple tree branches. Last night and early this morning they had some police problems at McDade’s. A big thing going on. Brogan away all night.

This has been a very cloudy rainy day. So foggy. I cleaned out my desk drawers and finished Esther’s letter. Nurse was here for Billie. Dorothea came early, did the work. Walter up for coffee this morning, first time for about three weeks. Carmen went to get Brogan. Betty and Zak up for supper. She made the sandwiches, very good. Zak went, got the bread for them. It was so good. I didn’t do much. A miserable day, rain and cloudy, foggy.

A nice clear day, but it was windy. It got warmer in p.m. Betty, Carmen, Brogan all took Kim out to honor her for her birthday. They took her to dinner then took her shopping. Zac came up here, got our supper. Very good. I finally got Esther’s letter ready to go. I sent Kim’s birthday card off.

Tuesday, April 12, 1994 Kimberly Allie Horton Harriman’s birthday

Today she and Tom went getting things for his apartment. He will be living up in Augusta. Kim had a nice birthday all told. Well Betty came, she did all the kitchen cupboards. Did a very good job. But she got so tired and her back got lame. Cameron was here all day with Betty. She has a lot of influence on him. Yet he was a very good kid all day. Snow gone a lot today. It is great to see it going all the time.
