The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, February 6, 1994

 

A very bright clear day. Dorothea came here early this morning before I got up. She has worked all day steady, the same as usual. Walt up for coffee this morning. He was going to Portland to get Zak. I wrote my letter to Esther.

 

 

 

Monday, February 7, 1994

 

A quite nice day and the temp quite good. Carmen came early this morning. She was here all morning until after lunch. She had to do her chores and take Cameron to the doctor. He has got a black and blue mark or scar on his face underneath his eye. He hurt it in the shopping cart while he was with his mother shopping. Carmen did a big wash today, cleaned up the house. Kim and Tom called, they went and got a couch they bought yesterday over to Norway, a birthday gift from Betty and Walt. Betty came and got supper. Zak was here, he took his car back with him. Carmen fell and hurt her leg down to Betty’s on the ice. Also Cameron was with her, he too got hurt.

 

 

 

Tuesday, February 8, 1994

 

Toward late p.m. it was cloudy with a little break in the clouds. We watched programs in p.m. Brud called in p.m. We shut TV off and talked with him. Betty and Walt gone to Portland. Betty went to get her teeth fixed. When she came home they brought KFC. Carmen and kids were here. We all had a good meal.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 9, 1994

 

Carmen came early this morning. As usual worked all morning then she went to town. She brought Cameron. Brogan at her Grammys. Cameron is not feeling very good. NO SCHOOL today. It broke away during middle of day. Then clouded up and it began to snow again. Watched TV soaps in p.m. Carmen got a good supper. Brogan and Cameron down to Betty’s the supper.
