The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, February 10, 1994

 

Clear and sunny but awful cold and the wind is blowing. Hope it don’t get down too cold. Carmen came early and done her chores. Also this morning two nurses came to see Billie about his needs. A nurse will come every day, baths etc. Betty to Lewiston to get her hair done. Cameron was here this PM, he was sick, cold and ear infection. Tom to Augusta to a interview for the new job for fire marshal.

 

 

 

Friday, February 11, 1994

 

A new nurse came and gave Billie has bath. She is nice. We like her. Debbie Ayers. Carmen came early, she has done a lot. Breakfast, changed beds, swept, dusted, gave bath or helped me. She done a lot this morning. Baby is a dite better. Dorothea came and got the supper tonight. It has been a very cold day, on the windy side. I can still walk better. I don’t know what made me improve. It sure is good to get up and move. Carmen came and did all the work today. Watched the TV soaps in p.m.



 

 

Saturday, February 12, 1994

 

It has turned out a very nice clear and sunny day. Not too cold either. Carmen came and worked all morning. She made some donuts, they were good all hot. David came for coffee. Debbie the nurse came for Billie. Susan talked with Esther this morning. Carmen washed floors. Cameron came too, he was quite good. He is feeling better. Betty and Brogan got the supper. They went home for supper because they were having company, Errol Briggs.

 

 

 

Sunday, February 13, 1994

 

Cloudy and snowing when we got up this morning. Dorothea came early, got the breakfast and done the work. The nurse, Debbie Ayers, came for Billie. Zak came, he fixed the wire Cassie had chewed it in places. It was telephone. He got it spliced and fixed. We watched Olympics on TV some. Tom plowed. Well remembered for Valentine, candy Dorothea and David, candy Betty and Walt, candy Billie, candy Carmen and Arnold, coloring, powder and perfume, Brogan and Cameron.
