The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

In a.m. it was kind of cloudy, but was sunny in p.m. Betty don’t feel very well. Walt out on a job. Betty had the kids a dite. Betty came, did her work. I still have the cold and cough. Carmen did her work today and the nurse came.

 

 

 

Friday, April 22, 1994

 

On the coolish side. I am much better, the cough and tizzy is gone. Carmen came this morning and done the work. A lot of it. She had the two kids. Carmen had two customers today. In p.m. Brogan had three kids they came for overnight. Dorothea came and got the supper tonight. David’s parsnips very good. Also fish and baked potatoes. A very good one, first time I had a pretty good appetite. Joy and Dorothea at Betty’s tonight. Carmen’s engagement came into the Norway Advertiser today. A very nice write up.

 

 


 

Saturday, April 23, 1994

 

A quite nice day. Not too warm. Jason came and took the lawn mower over to be overhauled for the summer use. Also he raked the lawn and swept the driveway and alongside the road. Looks very nice. I wrote to Esther today. Carmen came this morning and did the work. David came for coffee. BJ came over to Carmen’s this week. She probably will be coming to live with them soon. Betty up this forenoon than in p.m. came and got the supper. The supper we had was so good. Jason brought over some smelts and Betty cooked them. They was very good. Kids were down to Betty’s today. Cameron is still sick, another cold. I am so worried about him.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 24, 1994

 

A nice sunny morning. Dorothea came, done the work this morning. Walt up for coffee and donuts. Nurse came to see Billie this morning. Tom and Kim came to get the motorcycle out. Later Tom came up and drove it home. Betty here to get supper. Didn’t see the kids at all today. Carmen and Arnold done something, and took BJ home.
