The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 4 - 7, 1989

Monday, September 4, 1989 Labor Day

 

I washed. Clear and sunny but on the cool windy side. Billie very lame, picked things from the garden. I watched some shows. Got up early. Got ready, went to camp for breakfast with the Hortons. It was very good. Came home, didn’t do much. Brogan enjoyed eating her breakfast. She had a good time. Zack didn’t come, Walt went home sick. Esther came home, made cookies and Nona called and visited. Finished getting the bills off or ready to go tomorrow.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 5, 1989

 

It has been more of a partly cloudy day. Some sun. Not very warm either. Got the breakfast and Billie and Esther got ready and went to North Windham to shop. Esther for shoes, Billie for pants. No luck at all. They brought home some Kentucky Fried Chicken for supper, very good. Billie stomach is upset. Don’t feel very good. His foot is still bothering. Betty, Dorothea and Kim hauled furniture to and from the shed or storage house. This evening up to Dorothea’s, we took the annual pictures of the Smith girls. Had a good time. I washed.

 


 

 

Wednesday, September 6, 1989

 

A very nice sunny day. Esther made Angel cake delight. Kim made a cheesecake. We had steaks for supper. Had Zak also Carmen and Brogan. Betty gone all day. Billie worked in the garden etc. all day. Carmen, Esther, Betty Smith and Brogan all went shopping today. Susan called this p.m. She and Esther up to Dorothea’s to look some things over of Esther’s.

 



 

 

Thursday, September 7, 1989

 

Cloudy and foggy when we got up. I did a wash. We did the ironing. It cleared off real good and it was hot. Didn’t do very much. Kim came up and washed. We washed and ironed. Billie been very busy all day. Carmen called, she left Brogan here while she had some work to do. Also while she went for her doctors appointment.
