The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 23 - 26, 1989

 

Wednesday, August 23, 1989

 

Esther up early. Made brown sugar and chocolate brownies for tomorrow. I done some work, dishes etc. We did up the work, got the lunch. Esther got the supper prepared. I watched one show. In PM Esther and I went with Betty to Windham. Had corn on the cob last night. In evening Esther and I fixed beans (shelled) for Betty.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 24, 1989

 

A nice sunny day, on the coolish windy side. We got up early. Got the work done. Esther prepared the things to take up to camp. Esther’s friends Mr. and Mrs. Pat Sullivan came and we had a nice lunch of sloppy Joe’s, vegetables, brownies and beverages up to Twin Oaks. Very good. Everyone enjoyed it very much. It was so cold no one got in swimming. All talked and visited. A very nice day.

 

 





 

Friday, August 25, 1989

 

Another clear cold windy day. We done up the work. Esther made some pineapple salad and pie. I didn’t do much. Carmen came and cleaned, first time since her operation. Betty called also Kim, Zack and Brogan here with her mother. Esther cut off and hemmed my two bedspreads.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 26, 1989

 

Another very clear sunny day. It was on the coolish side. We got up, got breakfast and done up the work. Esther made filled cookies, sugar and molasses cookies. I made rolls. We baked beans. David came and had coffee and donuts. Carmen and Brogan gone to Leslie’s birthday party. Brogan was so pleased. Esther and Billie up to Fern’s. I had to take care of the rolls. Betty and Walt out riding around. Kim is working. Zak away. Billie did his outside chores etc. today.
