The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 16 - 18, 1989 Aunt Betty Returns from CA

Wednesday, August 16, 1989 BETTY SMITH LEAVES FOR HOME TODAY

Well when we got up it was raining lightly. After about an hour it began to clear out then the sun came out. Esther made a chiffon cake. I got the breakfast, done up the dishes. Billie and Jason worked on the fence out in the field. Esther got a call from Sullivan this morning. They got the horses into the field about 3 this PM. Zack and Walt are working on the well at the new house today again. Betty Smith left for home today. She arrived in Portland at about 10:45 PM. Very tired. Betty, Dorothea and Esther met her at the airport. Got home to Betty’s about 1 AM Thursday.

Thursday, August 17, 1989 Betty arrived home at about one this morning

Betty Smith arrived home at about 1 AM this morning. They stayed and visited with her for about two hours. She is very glad to get back home. I shampooed my hair, put a rinse on, took a bath. Esther cooked a very good supper tonight. Had a roast pork tenderloin, shell beans from the garden, cukes and a blueberry pie. Date nut bread. We had Betty and Susan for supper. Betty was so pleased to be home. She is dead tired. We looked at all of her snaps. Norma’s home is very pretty and attractive. She has done so well buying that and furnishing it. It is beautiful.

A beautiful day. Esther cleaned the house up. We had a good supper. Carmen got ready and left about 1:30 to go to Naples to meet Tom. They took a ride on the Songo Riverboat. About three Betty and I took Brogan down to meet Carmen in Naples. She will or did take Brogan to meet Joey, Dennis’s sister to get Brogan. Betty and I got to meet Tom. He seemed very nice. Then Betty and I picked Bo BO up and she brought him home. He was glad to get back except sore and lame. Came home and we got supper. Esther went shopping with Dorothea.
