The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 1 - 4, 1989

 

Tuesday, August 1, 1989 PERM

 

I got up early, got ready. Carmen came at quarter of nine to take me, and got my hair done. I’m so glad to get it done. Carmen busy. She worked up to the office. She got my groceries. I didn’t do much. Ebony very sick today, can’t get anything through her bowel or kidneys. Betty and Dorothea done a lot of papering at Zak’s.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 2, 1989

 

A nice day, not too hot. I done up regular work. Carmen took her car to get it fixed. Kim came up and painted the back porch. Got to go over it another coat. I didn’t do much of anything. Watched programs. Betty, Brogan and Carmen called. Ebony better today. She had a dite of movement in the middle afternoon. She passed a large hard movement. Dorothea and Betty papering over to Zak’s.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 3, 1989 check

 

Kim and Zak was here this morning. Kim came to paint. Got the porch floor painted at about noon. One coat. I worked at my desk. Got things ready and got the bills already to go. And checks in bank etc. Betty took me down.

 

 

 

Friday, August 4, 1989 Carmen to her Dr.

 

A nice sunny day. Billie mowed lawns. I did a wash. I have string beans ready for supper. It has been a quite humid day and uncomfortable day. Well Carmen got the dope today on her operation and the complete dope. She has got to be at the hospital at 7 AM Monday. Operation begins at 8. And it is to be a 4 to 6 hour operation.
