The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Kind of cloudy today. I did my wash. Watched a couple programs in a.m. Betty and kids went over and straightened up the shed, put some things away. They came up here for lunch. Brogan has a cold. Nose runs awful. Kim took her car down to be fixed. Zak called at suppertime. He didn’t eat much.

Tuesday, October 17, 1989 BROGAN THREE YEARS, SEPTIC, MEAT, APPLE

Today Brogan Alyssa Horton Willette was three years old. She and Carmen called. She gave her a bath. They went to town shopping. Then she came back and helped Betty to get her freezer cleaned out and meat in it. Today they came and cleaned up the septic tank. We got the meat back and got some apples. Betty, Carmen, Kim and Brogan here for lunch. We had new hamburger for supper, very good. Brogan has a cold. A bad bad earthquake in California.

Tonight we ate our first meal at the new house. Carmen’s home. Kim was a cohost. A very good supper. Roast pork, mashed potatoes, creamed onions, caramelized carrots, they were good. It was all delicious supper. She is a good cook. She made some dark raised bread, that too was delicious. And a good Indian pudding she made. It all was good. Billie and I, we enjoyed it. It has been cold today. Windy too. It was news all day on the bad earthquake they had in California last night. We sat up to 11:30. We was very worried about the family out in California. Billie went down and called on Alice today. She isn’t too good.

Another cloudy rainy day yet in the middle of the day it cleared up and we saw some sun. I didn’t do much today. Betty, Carmen, Kim, Brogan and Zack called also Dorothea stopped in late PM. Carmen don’t feel very good or Brogan. Carmen fried some donuts and brought some up. Very good. The folks in the earthquake area are okay. We hope Norma will be okay. She got shook up as she barely escaped. She didn’t go over that bridge.
