The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, August 19, 1989

 

A beautiful day. Got up early, got the work done up. Got the beans into baking. At about 9:30 Dorothea came to go to the yard sale at Brackett’s. Betty came and we went. The electric power was off for a couple of hours this morning. Well we went to the yard sale. I bought a lot of odds and ends. Betty but a lot of things. Carmen and Tom were there also. Bo Bo improving a lot. He is so pleased to be home. I feel bad about him. Esther up to New Hampshire with Susan and Monica today. Es got a chance to go to the yard sale for a while. Brogan came home tonight. She had a very good time with Dennis and his family. Betty Smith called today. Betty took us up to the new home. Carmen and Tom had a very nice weekend.

 

 

 

Sunday, August 20, 1989

 

Well when we got up this morning it was raining. We done up the regular work. Walt up for coffee. Esther made Pat’s molasses cookies. Walt up for coffee, later in a.m. David came for coffee. We didn’t do much today. Carmen and Brogan called for a little while. Esther cooked corn on the cob she got yesterday. Didn’t do much.

 

 

 

Monday, August 21, 1989

 

A nice mild day. We did the washing. Esther did about all the work. She and Billie over to Fryeburg to Dr. Goldenhar. Came home. I watched PM soaps, one of them. Billie picked the shell beans. Esther and I got them ready and we froze them. Carmen and Brogan here for supper. Kim called today. She been cleaning her house. Zack dropped in and Betty for a little while.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 22, 1989

 

Cool and windy. Esther made the Sloppy Joe’s for Thursday. It has been a very nice day. Carmen, Esther and Betty Smith all went shopping. First time Carmen went since her operation. Billie busy all day. Down to the shed etc. Kim called. Betty called after she got rescued by Jason up in the top of the barn. The doors blowed together. Kim painted the windows today. Trinna got full of hedge hog quills. Took her to the vet and she was put to sleep to get them out. Brogan and her doll came up this evening. She is very cute all the time.
