The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 6 - 9, 1989

 

Friday, October 6, 1989 Carmen and Brogan stayed up to their house for the first time all night

 

It was raining when we got up, it cleared off then it got cloudy and showered. David, Zack and Betty called. The kids came home about 2 PM. It was raining and cloudy at times today. We got a call from Dorothea. She and David invited us out to supper. We, Billie and I, went over to Shoreland’s. Had a good supper. It was very nice of them. Zack to the fair with a friend Jeff Hauser tonight.

 

 


 

Saturday, October 7, 1989 Branches

 

A partly cloudy day. It was sunny most of the day. The colored leaves are very pretty. I done up the regular work, washed floors. Got rest of B News is read. David didn’t come this morning. This forenoon Cookie and crew came and cut the branches off the big pine tree over to the barn. Billie and Ilan cleaned and trimmed a lot of them up. Carmen and Brogan came. Kim worked this PM.

 

 

 

Sunday, October 8, 1989

 

It has been on the very cool side. I done regular work. Walt up for coffee. David came in PM. Jason came, he and Billie got the limbs and mess cleared up, also he harrowed the garden for first time. Zack to the fair with a friend, a Cambodian boy, very smart.

 

 

 

Monday, October 9, 1989

 

A beautiful day. I did my washing. Made my chicken pie. I made a few tarts. Betty, Carmen, Kim, Zak and Brogan here today. It has been a very cold day, clear and pretty. Zak to the doctors. It was too cold for Carmen to sleep up to her place so she came back and slept here. Brogan slept down to Betty and Walt’s.
