The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, August 8, 1989

 

Cloudy and cooler this morning. It was mostly cloudy until late PM. Betty saw Carmen, she still was in pain. Sick to her stomach. Dennis brought Brogan to the hospital for Betty. He went in to see Carmen. His sister and mother was in to see Carmen this evening. Also Zak in PM. Kim went over with Betty. This evening Betty, Esther, Billie and I all called at Dorothea’s to see Fern. Fern is pleased to see Esther. Susan, Vince, Jane and Susan called on Esther. She enjoyed seeing Billie very much. Billie left to go home late this PM. I like the new fridge.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 9, 1989

 

A nice sunny day. Carmen not feeling very well. A lot of pain and sick. We been busy today. Brogan was pleased to get home. We had a good supper Es prepared. Billie been very busy.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 10, 1989

 

A quite nice day. Quite nice and mild. Betty over to see Carmen. She feels terrible. Susan called today. We done regular. Betty called here and to Carmen’s. Jason worked at Betty’s today. She left Brogan here while she went away. She and Walt ate out today. Betty been up to the new house. They are doing a lot and getting ahead. Kim came up and painted.

 

 

 

Friday, August 11, 1989

 

Been busy all day, mostly washed. Esther made two blueberry pies. We done up regular work. Esther vacuumed. Kim finished the porch floor steps. It looks nice. Esther’s pies were very good. Betty and Brogan was here also Zak called today. Watched. Carmena dite better. She had a more solid food today. Jason and Billie got a lot done painting fence, barn shed doors and the flagpole and fence posts. Dorothea called this evening. Kim went to town for us.
