The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 7 - 9, 1989 Carmen 'Retires' Temporarily

Tuesday, March 7, 1989

We are having good weather so far this week except very cold. I done my regular work. I did the ironing. Betty, Carmen and Kim here for lunch and Brogan. I kept Brogan here while Kim and Betty did some errands. Billie felt much relaxed today. He don’t do much when it was so cold. I cooked a chicken for supper, Perdue’s chicken breast. Betty and Carmen out walking tonight.

A beautiful day. I done up regular work, made a chocolate pudding. Watched TV shows. Betty brought Brogan up today while she went up to new house. They are making progress, electric wiring being gone, the plumbing being done. The window blinds have come. We watched TV in PM. It has been very cold. It is supposed to warm up tomorrow.

Thursday, March 9, 1989 CARMEN ALL DONE WORK at NORTHERN CUMBERLAND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A quite nice day. It warmed up some. I done some cooking. Rest of the work. I did other odd jobs. Eddie and Brogan came about 11:30. They walked up to the new house and back. Then she took me up to see the new blinds. They look so nice. Regular mansion. I love it. Watched the TV programs. Well today Carmen finished working at the NCM hospital. Reason: she has a child that needs her to be with her a few years. Carmen didn’t want to do it under the circumstances she has to face. It is all for the best and as things are today. It is common for parents. It is the best this way under this situation. She has to think of the child. I’m glad she will be with her at all times. Brogan took a long walk on the icy frost up to the new house, down from here to Betty’s and over to the Playhouse and back all alone.
