The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, February 28, 1989

 

A nice day. I done the regular work. I did the ironing. I watched a.m. shows, also in PM. Billie to Dr. Goldenhar for his foot trim. We watched the PM shows. Carmen and Kim here for lunch. Carmen liked her friend last night and enjoyed the evening very much. Betty dropped in late PM. I’m reading my first old diaries. Very interesting to me.

 

 

 

February summary

 

The new house is coming along very well. It is beautiful. I seen it several times. Carmen had some dates this year so far. I hope she will have more and meet a nice one and end up in marriage. Carmen was hit was a terrible blow, the marriage of Dennis. It hit her so hard due mostly to their child. She really loved him and still does. He dealt her wrong all along. Too bad. I’m so sorry for she and Brogan. Zack got his truck back. I’m so glad for him. Not a bad winter so far. Carmen and Zak moved from their apartment at the Lake, David Diller’s. The house got the outside clapboards, white siding and black blinds on. It is beautiful.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 1, 1989

 

At last March 1. All will be busy now rest of the year. A nice looking house is nearly done up here by Walt were Carmen and  Kim will live. Zak? Carmen will be moving out tomorrow. Billie to town to get his medicine and grain today.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 2, 1989 Carmen began to move into the apartment today

 

On the coolish side. March winds. Carmen, Kim, Betty began moving some of Carmen’s things today. A sunny day. Susan called at about 4:30, brought some pictures over. I was busy all forenoon preparing a Sloppy Joe supper, made and frosted a cake. Betty, Walt, Carmen and Brogan here for supper. Brogan quite confused tonight when she went into her new home tonight. She has a cold also. Brogan kind of confused. She asked her mother when she went to bed what is this place?
