The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 1 - 4, 1989

 

Wednesday, February 1, 1989

 

At last the first day of February. The month of January was very good, not too cold and no snow. Rain and freezing highways. I made a mac & cheese for supper. It was very good. Zack here for supper. He enjoyed it.

 

 

 

Thursday, February 2, 1989 $413, a good Columbus Day

 

Colder today. I done a washing. Carmen came and cleaned. I did some odd and end jobs. Betty called in PM. We went up to see the new house with the windows all in. Carmen and Kim to town. Kim had a lot of errands to do. Carmen and Brogan called in evening. Brogan is a cute and a good show off. She is so smart and entertaining.

 

 

 

Friday, February 3, 1989

 

I did odds and end jobs. I did the wash and ironed. I worked at the desk. I got papers read and magazines. Betty has Brogan today. Zack got his truck tonight. It needs more work done on it. Dorothea called in evening.

 

 

 

Saturday, February 4, 1989

 

Quite cold all day. David didn’t come this morning. I done regular work. I washed floors, cleaned bathrooms. I made bread, got the beans in. I got the letters and bills off today. Zack over to the National Guard this weekend. Billie done chores. Cleaned up the snow on the steps etc. Phonie came and plowed. Carmen worked. Kim out on a date tonight with a guy from Bridgton Academy, a teacher. I’m glad she has a friend. Carmen and Brogan called.
