The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 23 - 26, 1989 Lori Has A Baby, Zak Gets A New Job

Monday, January 23, 1989 ZACK TO WORK ON HIS NEW JOB

 

A beautiful day, clear and sunny all day. It was a nice clear moonlit night last night all night. I did a wash today. I done some other jobs. I also got my letters off to Peg, George, Betty and Esther. I worked on the puzzle today after Kim got it righted around and the pieces straightened out. Kim was here and Carmen and Brogan here for lunch. Billie gone down to South Bridgton. Today Zack began to work for the state. I wish him the best of luck. It is so good knowing he has a job.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 24, 1989

 

A nice day. I done regular work. I did the ironing. I cooked a beef soup for supper. Very good. Carmen called a little while today and in the evening she and Brogan dropped in.

 

 

 

Wednesday, January 25, 1989

 

I done regular work. Worked on the puzzle. I did or shampooed my hair. In PM Carmen came and cleaned the house. Billie got his haircut. Worked on the house today. I worked on puzzle today.

Thursday, January 26, 1989 HAIR SET Laurie a girl

 

This hasn’t been a very good day. Got about 4 inches of snow, some sleet and rain. I done up regular work. Took a bath and went down and got my hair done. Walt took me and came and got me. When I got home Jeff was there. He visited for about three hours. I came home, worked on the puzzle. Billie done regular work. Carmen, Brogan and Zack here for supper. A call from Joy that Laurie had a girl yesterday.
