The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Carmen took the checks to cash. Brogan’s cold not so good today. Billie cleaned the ditches out around barn today. Saturday, March 4, 1989 ZACK MOVED

This is been a cloudy day. I haven’t done much. Billie done chores and odds and end jobs. I got my reading all caught up. Carmen worked. Zack over to the NATIONAL GUARD. Tonight when Zak came home he went to look at apartment over to North Bridgton. He took it. Rented it from Dr. Steve Hatch. He, Carmen and Betty moved him and did the rest of Carmen’s moving. I’m so relieved that Zack didn’t have to move to the place in Waterford. Walt and Betty are having Brogan this weekend. Carmen on date number (blank) with Jim. David here for coffee this a.m.

Sunday, March 5, 1989

Another one of those cloudy dreary days. Carmen up for breakfast. It is bad traveling. The roads are being sanded. Zack dropped in for a cup of coffee. Walt couldn’t come because of Brogan.

Monday, March 6, 1989 Worked on furnace, I hope it will be better, Billie got a pleasing called tonight

Clear sunny day, on the very cold side. I did the wash. And fixed a Swiss steak for supper. Zack was here. Betty and Carmen came and left the baby for a little while. They went to Norway and did some shopping. They got my groceries. Also Betty did hers. Walt came and got Brogan. David home sick tonight. They came and worked on furnace today. Tonight at suppertime Billie got a call from his lawyer to come to Portland tomorrow for the picking of the jurors. Then Friday is to go for the trial. About three later he got a call. Said he didn’t have to go at all. They have settled the whole case. She had a settlement of about $3000. That was it. What a relief to Billie to get this word. He was so upset till he got that news.
