The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 28 - 30, 1988 Would Be Poppa's 80th Birthday

 

Wednesday, December 28, 1988

 

Clear when we got up, it clouded up and it was showery. Cleared later. I didn’t do much. Carmen worked. Kim called in PM. Betty out today. Walt worked. Brogan down to Betty’s today. Billie didn’t do much besides regular work. Watched shows. Billie Deming, Jane and Susan called in PM.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 29, 1988

 

A beautiful day. I didn’t do much. I watched those morning shows. Zak came up for a little while. Kim called. Carmen worked today. Joan babysat for her. Billie didn’t do much. Betty called a minute, got lunch. Watched TV in PM. They got the house all ready for the second floor. It was quite windy. Carmen called at noon and had a sandwich.

 

 

 

Friday, December 30, 1988 Bill’s 80th birthday

 

Today Bill would have been 80 years old. We all mentioned him very often. The same as much as ever. Wish he could’ve been here to see this new house being built. He looked forward to that. Also to have seen Brogan more. At least his suffering is over. He was in a lot of pain. He has been a very sick man for a long time. In and out of the hospital many many times. When a very young child he had diphtheria. Had gout very bad as a young man. And all his life. Bad heart, sugar diabetes, hemorrhaging. A bad case of cirrhosis of the liver. All those things he had. Many operations (serious) and very sick.
