The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 5 - 8, 1989 Carmen's 26th Birthday

 

Sunday, February 5, 1989 Carmen Christie Horton 26

 

A very nice sunny day. I done up regular work. Walt up for coffee. Carmen and Brogan came. Carmen has her 26th birthday today. She got money and gifts. She and Kim out for supper. A gift from Walt. She was very pleased.

 


 

 

Monday, February 6, 1989

 

A nice sunny day. I did the wash, made two rhubarb pies and sauce. I worked on puzzle till Brogan came. She stayed here while Carmen and Kim went to Windham and had their hair done and Carmen got her new outfit to wear on her date Thursday night. Betty came and picked Brogan up about 11:30. Took her down to her house and put her to bed. Carmen and Kim got home at about 2:30. Kim came home sick. Carmen got the groceries at Windham today. Zack, Carmen and Brogan here for supper.

 

 

 

Tuesday, February 7, 1989 OIL Carmen on date tonight, Kim very sick

 

I done up regular work. Cleaned the oven. Made up the cocoa, worked on the puzzle. Cooked corned beef and cabbage for supper. Kim still sick. Walt took her to the doctor. Betty took some hot soup up to her. I hope she will feel better soon. Tonight Carmen out on a date with a new friend. I hope she gets a good guy.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 8, 1989 cold, 0° when I got up

 

A nice sunny day, cold. I done regular work. Betty has Brogan. Carmen working today. I worked on my puzzle and finished it. Kim still sick and didn’t work. I’ll be glad when she gets well. Carmen came down sick tonight. She went to the Dr., she has pneumonia. I will be glad when they get better.
