The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice sunny day. Phonie plowed driveway. I been busy all forenoon. Made bread, rolls, lemon sponge pie. Did up the housework etc. Zack gone all day. Brogan came home from her grandparents over to Lewiston tonight. Carmen was about sick when she came because of the news of Dennis. He got married. It was so shocking to Carmen. I wish I could do something for her.

Sunday, February 19, 1989 Birthday dinner for Betty

It was cloudy when we got up. It cleared later. Carmen and Brogan came early. They had breakfast then. Carmen got her washing to going. Then we got the potatoes, onions ready, the table set up etc. She went down to Betty’s for a while. We had a roast pork dinner. Had the Horton family, Dorothea and David too. Hard for Fern to get out so she will stay at home. Kim worked for Carmen today. Carmen was so hurt from that blow.

Zak called and got the car and got it fueled up with gas and cleaned the inside. Carmen came up and got Brogan. Carmen down and done the chores. Kim was sick today, it is pneumonia. Betty took her to the doctor.
