The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 4 - 6, 1989 Joy has Gallbladder Surgery

Wednesday, January 4, 1989 COLD COLD COLD COLD

The wind has been blowing very hard all day. It makes it 40 to 50° wind chill factor. I got up, got my hair washed, got the breakfast, done up the housework. Took a bath. Got my roast pork to cooking. It was cooked to perfection. Kim came and we went down and got Betty S. I went down to the eye Dr. Miller to have my eye checked. Then we went up to the hospital to see Betty and Joy. Betty looks good and felt quite good. But Joy just came back from surgery. She did look very good and was kind of out of it. Walt up here for supper. He enjoyed it very much. Brogan has a cold.

Thursday, January 5, 1989

A nice sunny day but was cold, quite a lot of wind. I done up the regular work. Made a meat hash, made my cocoa for a week. Carmen called later in PM. Billie got caught up on his reading. I worked on the puzzle. Kim home sick with the flu today. I’m worried about her. This is such cold weather, her place is cold and don’t heat enough to keep her comfortable when it is so cold. I hope she gets better soon. Betty is much better. Coming home tomorrow. Joy is still quite sick.

Friday, January 6, 1989 Betty came home from NCM hospital

A nice sunny day, not so cold. I done up regular work, washed. Worked on the puzzle. Carmen called in late PM. At about 10 AM Betty came home from NCM hospital after operation. I’m glad it is all over and she is doing nicely. I have talked with her. Billie, Zak and Carmen called on her. She was so pleased to get back home. It looks so good she said. Walt was very pleased with her being home. Brogan gone to Lewiston with her father for the weekend. She loves to go up there. Kim better and back to work tonight. Dorothea, Zack called this evening. I made a apple pie, jelly and applesauce.
