The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 -3, 1989 Betty Has Gallblader Surgery

Sunday, January 1, 1989

 

First day of 1989. It was sunny most of the day. In late PM it got cloudy. I done up regular work. Walt up for coffee. Betty called, also Carmen and Brogan. Jeff came later. Betty and Carmen came up and got me and took me up to see the new house. It is so nice. It will be extra nice. I’m glad for those two girls. I hope they can swing the expenses. Carmen brought supper up tonight. A very good pot roast and brownies.

 

 

 

Monday, January 2, 1989

 

A cloudy dreary day. I done up the regular work after getting up late at 7 AM. It was a holiday and on TV just parades and in PM sports. So I worked on the puzzle. Brogan was up for a while in a.m. She is a sweet little bundle. Love her to the bottom of this world. She is a dear to us all. Tonight the daily walker’s called, Dorothea, Joy, Betty and Carmen. A little later Kim called, she was home from work.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 3, 1989 Betty

 

A nice sunny day. Betty up early and down to the hospital early for the operation. She was over it and in recovery in about a couple hours. Walt was with her. The girls went to see her and Zak. She was very sick and in awful pain most of the day. Zak and Carmen here. Carmen came and cleaned. Brogan was here. It was a nice sunny day. Carmen went shopping. I worked on puzzle. Billie had Zack take him to town.
