The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 20 -22, 1988

 






Tuesday, December 20, 1988

 

A nice sunny day. I done up the ironing. It warmed up a lot today. I made a pie, cooked a nice piece of corned beef for supper. Very good. Just before suppertime Betty came up, we went up to see the new house. It is coming along good. Carmen, Kim, Zack and Brogan here today. They got the lunch after Carmen came back from town. Carmen had to go to work at three. Zak stayed at Carmen’s last night for the first time. Tonight Betty picked up Betty S, Dorothea and me also Brogan was with us. We went to see all the trees. Brogan was very excited and very cute. We saw Betty S, Betty H, Dorothea and Carmen’s trees. They also was very pretty. We called in to see Kim early in PM. She too has a very nice pretty one. Kim’s house looks very nice.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 21, 1988

 

Temperature up yesterday and in the low 50s today. I done regular work. Carmen and Betty went to Norway. Betty asked don’t feel very good. Did odd and end jobs. I made some tarts and a cinnamon roll. The new house is coming good. Got the walls up. A bad plane crash in Lockheed Scotland. Pan AM plane on the way to New York. All were killed on board.

 

 



 

Thursday, December 22, 1988 KIM’S DAY IN COURT

 

A nice day. Sunny, not as mild as yesterday. I done up the work. Then I went down to Betty’s. We made cornballs, fudge, pumpkin bread. Kim there, made the scrabble. Carmen and Brogan here. Carmen did a lot of errands. Bill got haircut. This was the day Kim went to court. She will go to Portland later for her other hearing. Tonight Carmen entertained Dennis’s folks. Zak up for supper and the evening. Also Joy came over. We had a steak supper. Dorothea called here and down to Betty’s. Kim to Portland tonight. Betty cooked the steaks and made the salad. Very good. Joy called this evening.
