The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 5 - 8, 1986

Monday, May 5, 1986

Well it was cloudy and rain in a.m. but it cleared off. I did a washing, cleaned the draws in the kitchen. One of the steers Billie bought had problems. He had the vet. Didn’t improve any. Bill picked some more greens, we had them for supper. They was very good. Zack called a minute. David down this morning to see the steer. Bill to the Dr., he is okay. Carmen didn’t call today.

Well it has rained and been cloudy all day. I did the radiators in Billie’s room. That steer went this morning to be butchered. I went down and called on Betty to see the house. It looks very nice. She has done very well getting the house looking so nice. Carmen came, she is undecided as to what she wants to do. Dorothea called later in PM, her skin condition is much better.

Wednesday, May 7, 1986 TWO HEIFERS CAME, BETTY ALL DONE HOUSECLEANING

Another one of those miserable days. It has been raining, cloudy and thundershowers. I did the ironing, made a custard pie. Fixed a Swiss steak supper. Carmen is still miserable with constipation. Billie got his two new heifers. Milan called today. Bill been reading all day.
