The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 24 - 27, 1986

Monday, March 24, 1986

On the cool side. I did the wash, done up the work. Made a pudding. Carmen called, she is down in the dumps. Don’t feel very good. Misses her cats, that is her problem. She will be better tomorrow. Bill went to the Dr., he has fluid. He got some pills for it. Billie’s toe is real bad.

Tuesday, March 25, 1986 Billie’s toe bad

A mostly cloudy, some sun. I did the ironing. Made a cake. We got steaks ready and Billie cooked them out on the grill for supper. They were very good. Had Zack up, he was pleased. Dorothea called for a visit this PM. Betty and I over to Carmen and Kim’s. Kim was at work. Carmen feeling better. She went to work. Dennis was there. Kim had another mystery phone call last night. She was worried and upset. Carmen and Betty went over to be with her. Eddie has gone up to Massachusetts to the hospital about his knee operation. Dennis has a job and that is a boost.

Wednesday, March 26, 1986 up in the 60s, very mild, windy, snow went a lot

I have been picking over the books (town reports) etc. over in the closet. Billie’s foot is bad today. He may go to the doctors tomorrow. Hair rinse.

Rained all day, mild temperatures. Snow went a lot. I didn’t do too much work. I looked at those town reports. Also I began to look at the photo albums. I made a hamburger delicious for supper. Made a pudding. Dorothea stopped in and got the water sample. Billie’s foot better, he didn’t go to the hospital yet. I hope it won’t be any worse.
