The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, May 24, 1986

 

This has been a very heavy dark rainy and dismal day. It rained very hard all night. All day and is raining this evening also. I been busy all day cleaning the house, cooking, doing floors etc. Milan and Betty called. David called, he helped Billie to pile over the hay out in the barn. Bill read books all day.

 

 

 

Sunday, May 25, 1986 David’s cow had calf

 

Well it was clear when we got up then it clouded again. Later the old BLACK clouds faded away. The sun came out. Milan here early. Also Walt came to have coffee. I done up the regular work. David’s heifer had a bull calf this morning. He helped the cow. Dorothea and Fern called this PM. Fern liked being out for a little while. They also called at Milan and Betty’s.

 

 

 

Monday, May 26, 1986 first cookout

 

I done up the work and did the washing. Carmen called. We had a cookout today at Twin Oaks. It was beautiful up there, nice and sunny. They had different ones come so they could get the docks out. Kate and friend, Kay and Phil, Carmen and Dennis. Bill, Billie and me and all the dogs. They had such a good time. Also we all enjoyed the good time talking, laughing etc. Also Tom and Charlene came. Kim and Sue Paul was there. Dennis was relaxed and talked a lot today. Dorothea and Dave came and got water.

 



 

 

Tuesday May 27, 1986 DOROTHEA BEGAN EXERCISE CLASS TONIGHT

 

Well a mixed day. Supposed to be all sunny and mild, but it was cloudy and some sun. It showered. I did my ironing down to Betty’s with Kim. Kim came and she took me to town. They did the horse’s hooves. Milan called, also Bill McDade. Billie to the doctors for checkup. Still they haven’t got his sugar dosage regulated. Dorothea to her exercise classes this evening at Bear Mountain inn in South Waterford. She called here on her way home.
