The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 5 - 8, 1986 Carmen's BIG NEWS

Wednesday, March 5, 1986 CARMEN

Well Carmen sure laid the surprise on tonight. She told us about her condition. She has been so sick. We felt so sorry for her, but now we know why. (Yet we still think she is nervous and shook up from all her sorrow.) Anyway she was so relieved after telling us all. She is working to make up for the time she has lost at Naples. Carmen called here and at Betty’s.

Thursday, March 6, 1986 KIM

It has been a partly cloudy day. Well Kim was dealt a heavy blow today. Eddie told her after talking with his folks he has decided to go to school instead of marrying. That sure upset her awfully. We all felt so bad for her. Well Carmen felt better today. She came for breakfast. Dorothea was here. She told her about her being a mother. What a surprise to us all. I hope she will have a good life with the baby’s father. Betty and I over to Kim and Eddie’s. They was surprised about Carmen and pleased. They was happy at that time. Then Kim soon had the blow dealt her. She called and said Eddie was going to school and they were NOT going to be married now. We are so sorry for Kim. A terrible blow. We all felt bad too. Had a chicken dinner.

Friday, March 7, 1986 SNOW No School

We got about 8 inches snow last night. It is so sickening. Phonie plowed us early in a.m. I cooked a dite. I watched TV soaps. Milan called. Billie’s toe is fair. Bill is doing quite well. Zack up and shoveled. Milan didn’t make it today.

Saturday, March 8, 1986 cold and very windy

A nice clear sunny day but a very cold and windy. I did the sweeping, dusting, washed floors, made rolls. Milan called. Also Betty called a little while on her way to meet Walt. They are going shopping.
