The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 2 - 4, 1986

Friday, May 2, 1986 Dandelions Greens, Checks came

A quite cloudy dreary day. It cleared about noon, some sun. I did the closets in living room, made a mince pie and a chocolate pudding. Did other jobs. It was colder today and windy. Billie to Dr. Petrone, his toe is doing quite well. He gave him some antibiotics. Bill to town today, cashed the checks. Billie over to see Anse Buzzell in Fryeburg. He has bought a couple steers to turn out. Betty worked in her living room today. She had callers. Kim down there and varnished her floors. Carmen called, she had a new dress, she looked nice. Bill picked the first mess of greens. Had them for supper, they was delicious.

A partly cloudy day. On the very cold windy side. I’m lamer than an old truck horse. All I did was regular work, washed floors and vacuumed. Billie and Zack hauled manure. David was coming down but didn’t until after lunch. Betty and Walt up to New Hampshire to shop, they are going to get me some things. David came to see the (blank).

Sunday, May 4, 1986 STEERS CAME, David’s cow had calf

It has been quite cold and windy. It got warm in PM. I done up regular work. Worked at the desk etc. Milan, Betty and Zack called. Zack worked to haul out manure with Billie. David came down, did something for Billie. Dorothea, Carmen and Dennis called in PM. My old leg is better tonight because I haven’t been on it today. Dorothea called and Walt for coffee. Got cloudy tonight. Well today Billie had two steers come. First time there has been any cattle for about three months. They are Herefords for beef. Got them from Anse Buzzell at Fryeburg. David’s cow had a heifer calf this morning.
