The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

I vacuumed a dite this forenoon. I made a Jell-O and a chocolate pudding. Kim brought some of the things over and put into my closet. Went to the cemeteries today. Quite a nice day. Betty S, Betty H and I.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 29, 1986

 

A quite nice day. I been doing some things today to get done before hot weather gets here. Dorothea’s day off, she called late in PM. Billie to the doctors for sugar checkup. It is regulated very well now and he won’t have to go so often.

 

 

 

Friday, May 30, 1986

 

A nice day. I did a wash and some other odd jobs. Kim called. Billie busy going here and there. We watched TV shows in PM. Bill reading. Dorothea and Betty Smith to exercise class tonight but they didn’t have any.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 31, 1986 Kim all done moving, Carmen moved the horses all over to her house

 

Well not too good a day, it was some sun and clouds. I was busy all day. I got the work all done up. Washed floors, swept, dusted. Billie busy all day. I baked beans. Today they moved the horses over to Carmen’s house. Betty, Bill and I went over with Betty to see them when they came. How they put all that green feed into them. I came home, made a cake and biscuits for supper. Carmen and Dennis called. Today Kim and Zack got rest of Kim’s things moved home. Called Esther tonight from Betty and Milan’s.
