The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 28 - 30, 1985 Thanksgiving Back At The Farm!!

Thursday, November 28, 1985 THANKSGIVING DINNER AT HOME TODAY

Today we had the first Thanksgiving dinner at home, now Betty and Walt’s. Dorothea and David went to Jeff’s. They had a good dinner and a good time. Fern ate with us. Milan, Betty, Carmen and us were their guests. We had a delicious dinner. Turkey, onions, turnip, shell beans, celery, relish, gravy, hot rolls, dark bread, pies. Bill was unable to go, he was sick. Eddie and Kim came after work, they ate. Betty S and Betty H and Carmen worked hard getting the dinner and cleaning up from it. Zack helped and Walt. Cloudy and rain and snow. David came home, had to ride back to the job tonight.

Says January but I believe its from Thanksgiving

Friday, November 29, 1985 Bill to the NCM hospital

Still cloudy most of the day. I been busy, didn’t get up till 6:30. I got the breakfast, done up the work. Did a washing. Milan called and Dorothea came. She said Bill should go to the hospital to be checked out. He wasn’t very agreeable but finally went. He was very low in blood and he looked like death, white, thin and weak. Dorothea took him down, Milan went too. She came back and had to go shopping. She picked me up a few things. I vacuumed, made a fish chowder.

Washed floors, changed beds etc. Milan and David called this morning. Bill still in hospital. Carmen and Zack to Portland to Christmas shop. Betty and Walt Christmas shopping in Lewiston.
