The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 15 - 17, 1985 Carmen in Hospital

Friday, November 15, 1985

 

It was a nice sunny day, on the cool windy side. I got up at 5:30 and at 6:30 Milan and Betty came. We went to North Conway to do the grocery shopping. Got home a little after 9:30. I did my wash, made brownies and a custard. Carmen worked, no more till Monday. She still is bad.

 

 

 

Saturday, November 16, 1985 CARMEN IN HOSPITAL

 

 

 

I did the regular work. Washed floors, windows, dusted, vacuumed. Made rolls, changed bedding. I got ready, went down to Betty’s for a little while. While I was there getting ready to go over to Carmen’s, she called, she was in the hospital, NCM, expected to come right back home but no, she was very bad and they kept her overnight. Betty and I went down to see her. She was so sick. We went over to her house for a little while. Kim had got home from work. She looks sick and not good at all. Billie, Zack hauled hay over to Carmen’s. Milan called.

 

 

 

Sunday, November 17, 1985

 

I got up about 7 AM. I done up the work. Walt called and David had coffee. Milan, Betty called. Susan and Monica came to call in their new car. It is a very pretty (?), A new car. Lynx. I’m glad for them. I watched shows at Betty’s, made a chicken pie for supper. Eddie and Kim called tonight.
