The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 18 - 20, 1985 Carmen Home From Hospital

Monday, November 18, 1985 CARMEN HOME FROM HOSPITAL

A nice day, sunny. I got my washing done quite early. Carmen came home today from the hospital. She is some better, but very tired and exhausted. When she came home Betty, Betsy, Billie and I all went over. Billie worked in the barn. Us girls cleaned her house from top to bottom to free it from the cat dust etc. She has been very bad for at least two weeks. Betty sat the humidifier up in her bedroom, she was pleased to get back home and in her own room. Kimmy too is having asthma problems. And she is sick and don’t feel good. It is hard to see them sick.

A nice day. I washed, ironed, made pies. Billie over to Carmen’s and did chores. Also Walt helped. Betty S, Betty H and Carmen to Norway today. We had a steak supper, it was so good. Billie cooked them over the grill. We had Zack up. He loves steak. Carmen is better. Kim went to work after her two days off. Dorothea had the day off, she called for a while.

Wednesday, November 20, 1985 Carmen back to work, cards off to Scotland

It is still on the warm side. I done up my work and wrote to George, Betty and Peg. Milan called, Billie over to Carmen’s again. This is been on the cloudy side. It has been mild. Carmen called. Eddie down to Betty’s. He used the truck to haul rubbish to the dump. Bill about the same. He is okay in a.m., then in PM don’t seem as good. Carmen called in on way home from work. She is pretty good, but awful tired. Kim worked, Eddie didn’t. They called this evening. Carmen, Betty and Eddie hauled some things up to the barn from the little white house to use later. They brought the proofs for us to see for their engagement picture. They was also good, hard to choose.
