The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 21 - 24, 1985

Thursday, November 21, 1985

 

Up early to get ready to take Bill to the Dr. in Portland. He is having problems. He was sick all the way home and went to bed as soon as we got home. Sick all night. Betty and I out to the mall, did some shopping. Brought our supper home. Didn’t get home till 5:30. Dorothea called Betty tonight.

 

 

 

Friday, November 22, 1985

 

On the cloudy side. I made a couple pies, one for Carmen and Kim, one for us. Carmen came over and did the shopping. Kim and Eddie hauled some things up from the little white house that Betty is letting them have, also they got some dishes. Kim worked in a.m., Eddie to work in PM. Bill is a lot better today.

 

 

 

Saturday, November 23, 1985 Cleaned Well or Spring

 

Cloudy when we got up but clearing soon began by daylight, it was quite cleared. I done the Saturday work, floors, cooked, changed beds etc. Walt dropped in early. Milan and Zack called. Billie and Zack got a pump and pumped and cleaned the well or spring. It has had a taste for some time now. David came and helped. Bill is improving. Betty and I down to North Windham to shop. Betty did a lot.

 

 

 

Sunday, November 24, 1985

 

A quite nice day, on the cloudy side. Carmen called in PM then in evening. Walt up for coffee. Milan and Betty called. Bill very sick.
