The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 20 - 23, 1986

Monday, January 20, 1986

 

Well it cleared after a miserable Sunday. I did my washing, made a pie. Down town with Betty. Milan and Betty called. Carmen called.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 21, 1986

 

A nice sunny day. I got my work done. Watched TV programs. Milan called. Betty and Kim called. I went to Windham with them. Betty went down and got the order in for her bathroom paper. Bill down to Betty’s, plumber was there. Got the plumbing all done. Also the electrician came, he got the electrical work done. Bill and Billie got their haircuts. Dorothea called on her day off. Carmen called, she don’t have to work. She has the day off. I did the ironing, cleaned cupboards. Made a cake. Zack called after school. Alice Leavitt and Ruth Gammon called for flowers for Richard Graffam.

 

 

 

Wednesday, January 22, 1986

 

Mild. I done odd and end jobs. I made a chicken stew. Bill been in most of the day. He and I went down to see the house or Betty’s new bathroom. Carmen called this PM. Mild this morning but it cooled off.

 

 


 

Thursday, January 23, 1986

 

A nice sunny day. I did a wash. Bill called at Betty’s. Kim left her dog at Betty’s again. Betty been painting today in her hallway. Her new shower is very nice. This has been a beautiful day except on the cold side. Dorothea got me some things at the store today.
