The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 1 - 3 ,1985 Kim and Eddie Rent New Home

Sunday, December 1, 1985 AT LAST KIM HAS HER OWN HOME

I got up early, got the breakfast. Got the work done up. Betty came about 9:30. We headed for Kim’s, what a mess. Well we, Carmen, Betty, Kim, Zack and I started in, carried lumber, vacuumed, washed, swept, dusted. It was cloudy, rainy and miserable. Anyway we got cupboards done, stove, refrigerator, table etc. Milan was there but he got cold and came home. They moved Kim’s things than from Carmen’s in evening. She has a lot of settling to do. It is cleaned though. Eddie is going to paint later. Bill came home from NCM hospital. He drove over to Kim’s all alone, quite a risk. KIM AND EDDIE MOVED AND CASSIE.

Monday, December 2, 1985

Another cloudy miserable day. I did the wash, made a cake. Over to Carmen and Kim and Eddie’s. Hauled stuff to the dump, they slept in their new place last night. Poor Cassie. I feel so sorry for her. She will be so lonesome and cold. Carmen got her house all cleaned up. She stayed there last night alone for first time. I did the wash today.

Tuesday, December 3, 1985 SUNNY, COLD

Well the sun was out all day, it came up clear and nice but the wind began to blow and it blowed hard all day. Wicked cold. I done up the work, made three turkey pies and a apple pie. All day doing it, what a job. Dorothea called today. She called Bill’s Dr. in Portland. His stomach is still upset. Billie over to help Carmen fix her mailbox. Betty over to Carmen and Kim’s, took the turkey pies over. Poor Cassie out in the awful cold and all () up. Cold, too bad. I knew it would be awful for her all alone this winter over there.
