The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 18 - 21, 1985

 

Wednesday, December 18, 1985

 

A pretty nice day. We had a big snow shower. Carmen here, we wrapped Christmas gifts. She had to go to work. I made fudge all day. It was a nice day till afternoon then it got awful cold and high winds.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 19, 1985 15 below

 

A nice sunny day but very cold. I got my work done up early, went down to Betty’s. Betty S was there, we made fudge, cornballs. Betty made her cornballs, pumpkin bread, fudge. Carmen was there and Milan. Bill there for lunch. Dorothea came in PM and made a long visit. In Eve we went to see Delores at nursing home and Dot. Over to Carmen and Kim’s. Kim had the day off, got her hair done and did some shopping. We went to see their trees.

 

 



 

Friday, December 20, 1985

 

I changed beds. Did the washing, ironing. It has been cold. Milan and Betty called. Betty H called, Carmen. Last day of school for couple of weeks. Billie in and out. Bill to town.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 21, 1985

 

A nice day, on the coolish side. I made rolls. Beans and gingerbread. Washed floors, vacuum, dusted, washed windows. Cleaned outside of cupboards. Benji over this PM. Bill over to Carmen’s. Billie up to David’s.
