The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, February 8, 1986 FLICKA TO THE HOSPITAL IN NEW HAMPSHIRE LATE

A quite nice day, on the cool side, some clouds. I done up the work then Bill and I drove over to see how Flicka was. She was still very sick. The vet was there. Everyone is worried about Flicka. She was getting worse. So they decided to get her to New Hampshire to have the operation. Finally they got someone with a horse van to take her. Walt, Betty was there all pm. Charlene, Billie and David was there too. Flicka was very weak and sick when they left about 5:30 pm. Betty came home and Walt went with Carmen.

Early this morning Betty called and told us the very very sad news. Flicka died on the operating table. Poor Carmen. She done the best she could. Flicka was very sick. She had the vet from Norway several times. The last time they said they couldn’t do anything more. They said it would be an operation, now to find out. They made arrangements to take Flicka to Rochester New Hampshire. It was very late when they got someone to take her. It was a hard day for everyone. Betty and Walt called at Carmen’s this pm. She want home when they got there. Dorothea and David called, Milan called. Kim and eddie called. Kim here for breakfast. Eddie and Kim gone to Marblehead Massachusetts. Carmen came home late in evening.

A nice day. I been busy, done the wash, made two pies. Carmen still all to pieces. I’ll be glad when she is used to things. It is awful. She has  to face this awful blow. We are all awfully sorry and the loss is terrible. It was hard to face or believe it is so.
