The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 3, 1986 A New Year!

A quite nice day, mild. I done up the work. Zack stayed last night. He helped to take down the decorations (Christmas). Milan called a little while. Carmen dropped in.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 2, 1986

 

A nice sunny day. This morning we took the chairs back to the store so they could give us back our checks as they had nothing in the store we want. Carmen, Betty S, Milan and I all went. Also Carmen took her dog to the vet to be operated on so not to have puppies. Barry finished up at Milan’s, the porch and a few other odd and end jobs. Billie out today, Bill didn’t feel too good after he came home from the hospital after having x-rays and tests.

 

 

 

Friday, January 3, 1986 A BIG STORM 6 to 8 inches, a slight raise in SS Bill $399 old amount 387, Althea  $174 old amount 168

 

This is been a miserable day, snowed all day, wind blowed some, temp in the teens to low 20s. I did a washing, made a pie. Cooked a good soup for supper. Carmen had to go to work tonight. She got her dog back from the vet. She called in. Betty, Walt and Zack working on the bathroom today. Getting it ready for Barry to go to work in next Monday. Carmen got home from work okay tonight because they had plowed when she came to work. It was bad roads and want plowed.
