The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Well we had expected a nice day but when we got up it was cloudy and it soon began to spit snow then it got to snowing and by afternoon it snowed hard all rest of the day with about 4-5 inches. It snowed until late tonight. I been busy most of the day, vacuum, dusted, washed floors. Did a dite of cooking. Milan came for a while, Zack came, he and Billie down town and around. Carmen didn’t have to work tonight.

Sunday, January 26, 1986 MISERABLE DAY

It rained and snowed all day. A very heavy rain, caused flooding in many places. I didn’t do much outside regular work. Walt came and had coffee. Dorothea and David came.

Another one of those horrible days. I did a washing, made a pie. Cooked a turkey supper. Milan, Betty called. Carmen dropped in in the PM. Betty and I over to Harrison to see about Betty’s vanity for her bathroom. The man hadn’t even begun to work on it. She is going to take it to someone else. We drove over to Carmen and Kim’s. Carmen’s car didn’t start. Bill helped her to get it to going. We went to Kim’s. Her house was nice and clean upstairs. But their room downstairs is flooded. What a mess. I hope they don’t get sick. It is soaked floor and rug also her things. I feel so sorry for them, wish I could help.
