The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 8 - 11, 1985

 

Sunday, December 8, 1985

 

Cloudy and cool. Walt called, Milan, David. I made fudge, meat pie. Kim don’t work. Called over to Kim’s, she and Eddie was settling the house. It is a cute little place. Betty, Bill, Zack, Walt worked over to Carmen’s on cellar.

 

 

 

Monday, December 9, 1985

 

A quite nice day, not too cold. It was some cloudy. I did my wash, made a batch of fudge. Fern still sick. Barry R and his father started Milan’s porch today. Betty H, Betty S, Bill and I went over to Carmen’s to see her cellar. From there he went over to Kim’s. She had gone shopping with a friend. Her place looks nice. Carmen’s cellar looks very good. Zack done such a good job. Bill getting ready to go to Portland for a examination. Dorothea is going to take him.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 10, 1985

 

Today it was a quite nice day. I got my work done up. Bill got ready and went to the doctors in Portland. Winchenbach. He is about the same. I hope he don’t go to Portland again. He will be just as well. Betty, Carmen and I went and done some shopping.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 11, 1985

 

Was quite a nice day, it got cloudy and it began snowing tonight. Carmen called in evening. Milan called. Betty called. She and Zack busy hauling furniture etc., getting things ready for Christmas. I done my regular work and the ironing. Got more cards.
