The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 5 - 7, 1986 Carmen's 23 Birthday

Wednesday, February 5, 1986 Carmen Christie Horton 23 years

It started out cloudy, snowy etc. But it cleared and was nice. Bright, sunny and warm 45° in PM. No school. I did my ironing. Made a cake. Did up the work and other odd jobs. Bill got blood today. Milan called. Dorothea called in late PM. Today I watched the programs. Got a nice baked sliced ham supper for Carmen’s birthday. She enjoyed that very much. After supper Kim and Eddie called. Betty, Walt and Zack. We had ice cream and cake. She went to Auburn shopping today. Barry working at Betty’s today. Clyde Rowe, a cattle dealer and friend and Billie’s, died today.

A nice day. I done up the regular work. In pm I worked on the puzzle. Watched tv shows. Carmen called. Flicka is sick, she had the colic. The vet came and gave her something. Carmen discovered that when she turned Flicka out, something was wrong. When she got home tonight Flicka’s was still sick. I guess it wasn’t colic. She called the vet again. He came, they told her to walk her some more which she did. I called at Betty’s to see the new bathroom.
