The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 -12, 1982

 

Saturday, January 9, 1982

 

Well a nice day. It clouded up in PM. I done up regular work and Saturday extra. I made some rolls. Betty, Zak and Carmen went to Portland. Carmen got her a new coat, Betty got one too. Kim up babysitting. Walt home all day sick. Jeff came back to Dorothea’s tonight. Billie and Dave over to Norway. Billie’s jersey calf sick. He ate the sawdust from his pen.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 10, 1982

 

Well it is been sunny, cloudy and snow flurries. I didn’t get up until 7:15. I got the breakfast, done up the work, the granddaughters came up and called. We looked at some old picture cards of Bridgton and towns in this area. Very interesting. Bill called at Fern’s.

 

 

 

Monday, January 11, 1982

 

I did my washing. Bill and Billie in and out. It was very cold all day. Fern is down in the dumps. It is cold and snow, she gets so bored. Bill called on her and Billie did.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 12, 1982

 

Well a quite nice day but very cold. Betty, Carmen and Dorothea went to New Hampshire. I was going but I decided it was too cold. It was quite late when they got home. I did my ironing. Bill and Carmen over to Norway in PM.
